Installing Frame
Download Frame for Mac, sign in with your Console account and set up DaVinci Resolve Studio for it.
Frame is a Mac app that drives DaVinci Resolve Studio. It is included on Pro and on the free trial, and is £9 a month on Starter and Studio.
What you need
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Mac | Apple silicon |
| macOS | 14 or later |
| DaVinci Resolve | Studio 21 or later. The free edition does not run external scripts, which Frame needs. |
| Your role | Owner, admin or manager of the workspace |
Turn Frame on
On Pro it is already on. On Starter or Studio, click the Console tile at the foot of Cue's sidebar and choose Add Frame on the Apps card.
Install
- On the Console page, choose Download Frame on the Frame card, or download it from getconsole.app/frame/download.
- Open the disk image and drag Frame into Applications.
- Open Frame and choose Sign in with Console. Your browser opens to finish signing in; then choose Return to Frame.
- If macOS asks whether Frame can reach files on a network volume, allow it.
- The first time Frame has something to tell you, such as a client's notes arriving, macOS asks whether Frame may send notifications. Allow it.
Frame keeps itself up to date after that. When a new version is ready, a strip at the top offers to install it, and Frame never installs while it is rendering or uploading.
Set up Resolve
Frame drives Resolve through its scripting interface, which is off by default.
- Open DaVinci Resolve Studio.
- Go to Preferences, then System, then General.
- Set External scripting using to Local.
- Save, then quit and reopen Resolve.
After that you don't need to open Resolve yourself. Frame starts it when a step needs it and opens the episode's project. If Resolve is showing its blank startup project, Frame closes it without saving, so no Save prompt gets in the way.
The audio presets and their plugins
Frame builds each episode from a Resolve project template, and the template decides how the voices are processed. There are two audio presets:
| Preset | How the voices are processed |
|---|---|
| Studio 808 chain (recommended) | Fairlight's Voice Isolation and Dialogue Leveler on each voice track; FabFilter Pro-C 2, Pro-Q 4, Accentize dxRevive and FabFilter Pro-L 2 on the voice bus; iZotope Insight 2 on the master |
| Resolve built-in | The same routing with Fairlight's own tools only: Voice Isolation, Dialogue Leveler, Compressor, EQ and Limiter |
The Studio 808 chain needs these five plugins on the Mac, as Audio Units or VST3:
- FabFilter Pro-C 2
- FabFilter Pro-Q 4
- FabFilter Pro-L 2
- Accentize dxRevive
- iZotope Insight 2
Frame does not include them; they are bought from their makers. On a Mac without all five, the Studio 808 chain is greyed out with Install these to use this preset and the missing ones listed. Resolve built-in works on any Mac.
Frame includes both templates and adds them to Resolve the first time an episode needs one. Set the studio's default in Frame's Advanced view (the Advanced switch at the top right, then the Cut panel), and change it for one episode on the Build card.
If Frame cannot reach Resolve
Frame says so on a card, with one button to fix it. Resolve not opening, the free edition and External scripting not set to Local each have their own card; see when Frame shows a problem card.
